America’s Wars: Individual Experience and Collective Memory

America’s Wars: Individual Experience and Collective Memory

How do soldiers remember war? And how are these memories communicated to others? Through interviews with Raleigh-area veterans, through personal artifacts and mementos, through popular culture (videos, music, games), this exhibit looks at how we look at war. Focusing on Vietnam and Afghanistan/Iraq, this exhibit explores the dynamic between local veterans’ personal experiences and the collective memory of the community to understand how Americans understand war.
