The Sir Walter social was this past Saturday, and it proved that you don’t have to be a nerd to enjoy Raleigh’s history. With the combined efforts of The Friends of COR Museum, The City of Raleigh and other historical groups we counted over 100 visitors in under 3 hours!
The event kicked off with a quick word from Douglas Noreen describing the Friends organization and its mission. Followed up by Ernest Dollar who expressed the importance of community within these organizations and encouraged collaboration. Both Sammy the Squirrel and Sir Walter Raleigh made an appearance as well as several historic reenactors from Yates Mill Park.
The Organizations represented were as follows:
Pullen Park Amusements
Raleigh City Cemeteries Preservation
Capital Area Preservation
Historic Oakview Park
Historic Yates Mill Park
The MT Pope House and Museum
The North Carolina Capital Building
Joel Lane House
Wake County Historical Society
Tar Heel Junior Interpreters
Raleigh Hall of Fame
Raleigh Fire Museum
And of course, The City of Raleigh Museum.
We received great feedback and plan on doing this event again next year!
